Why #BikeTheVoteTallinn?

Safe bike path and a quality urban space are among the most critical issues of this year’s local government elections. People’s health and safety must be made a priority. Last year, a total of nine people died and 134 people were injured in traffic crashes involving motor vehicles in Tallinn; in contrast, Helsinki, Oulu and Oslo have all achieved vision zero: no fatal traffic accidents. 

It’s time for a change. 

Businesses and organizations are likewise welcome to join the campaign by including the hashtags #BiketheVoteTallinn and #RattagaValima in their advertising this fall. Among current supporters of #BiketheVoteTallinn are well-known mobility businesses including Ampler, Tuul, Äike and Elmo Rent.

After the elections? Will politicians build bike paths?

Who?

Rattagavalima.ee was inspired by Finland’s own Bike the Vote initiative, Pyörävaalit.fi , which managed to gather politicians from all parties across the country. The goal is to draw attention to the issues of public safety and bike traffic ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

This page is a cross-party site, where, in order to avoid the undue promotion of any particular candidate or political party, candidates’ names are listed in alphabetical order according to city district.

Rattagavalima.ee and Estonia’s Bike the Vote campaign are led by Bicyle Mayor of Tallinn Pärtel-Peeter Pere. The position is part of a global network of bicycle mayors managed by the Amsterdam-based social enterprise BYCS, the goal of which is to promote bike use as well as create better living environments built on the foundation of safer streets. As biking is the most environmentally friendly and often the fastest way to get around town, BYCS also sees biking as an opportunity to fight against the climate crisis.

Bicycle mayors serve two-year terms.
